2023: New Every Morning

January 2nd, 2023. We are beginning a new chapter, titled 2023- a new year. I don’t know about you, but it can be intimidating for me, at least, to face the future. Life is uncertain, and we never know what the future holds. Though we don’t know what this new year will bring, we do know one thing for certain: Christ will always be there. The same Emmanuel that carried us through last year will still be here in 2023. Whatever joy and laughter, pain and sorrow, this year brings, Jesus has promised that He will never leave us, not even for a moment. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is constant, He is always the same- and yet, He offers us grace, mercies, and joy anew every day- like the sunrise, new every morning.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

God’s desire for us is to be made new. He wants to recreate us, so that we are abiding in Him, resting in His love, so that whatever this year brings, we can be securely grounded in Him.

Many Christians would consider themselves “born again”. We have experienced the “new birth” that Jesus spoke to Nicodemus of- the spiritual new beginning that we receive when we accept Jesus as our Savior and He forgives our sins. If you have never done this, I strongly encourage you- do it. Just pray and ask Jesus to wash away your sin and come live inside your heart. It will change your life!!!

However, it’s not just a one time thing, where you ask Jesus to save you and then go on with your life. It’s a daily walk in the newness of life that Christ has given us.

Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Every moment of every day, Jesus offers us fresh grace, new mercies. He offers us so many second chances when we fall. His compassion is endless: He will always forgive us and pick us back up, if we let Him! He wants to make you fully new, to give you new joy, new strength, new peace, new courage. He wants you to daily experience that newness of life that comes from being connected to Him!!

Us humans are always looking for something new to make us happy. We’re always trying to fill our empty heart, quench our intense thirst- but Jesus offers us something that will satisfy us forever, yet it is new every morning!

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:12-13

Jesus offers us living water- joy that springs up in us anew every day! This joy can only come from Him- we must be connected to Him to experience it!

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Psalm 16:11

Joy comes from being in God’s presence! When we take time to get to know the compassionate, gracious God that we serve, we experience joy that is fresh and lasting.

How do we get into God’s presence?

1.   We pray. Not just recite memorized words and phrases, but really pour out our heart to God, telling Him what’s going on in our lives.

2.   We saturate ourselves in God’s Word. Not aimlessly skimming over many chapters, but clinging to God’s promises and asking Him to show us His will through His Word.

3.   We praise Him. We thank Him for who He is and what He has done, we sing our hearts out to Him, we worship Him.

God delights in seeing His children joyful. He wants us to spend time with Him, not because He is harsh and demanding of our time, but because He knows how much we need the strength and hope and joy and peace that only He can give! He gives us so many promises from His Word for us to cling to in the mountains and the valleys of life.

Whatever your situation, He has promises for you.

Maybe last year was a rollercoaster and you want a fresh start. God will give you a new beginning. He says in Ezekiel 36:26, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”

Maybe last year crushed you, and your heart is broken, and you don’t know if you’ll ever feel whole again. God will heal your broken heart. Psalm 40:1-3 says, “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.”

Maybe you have goals and plans for this year but you’re not sure if you can accomplish them, and you’re afraid you’ll fall flat on your face. God wants to reveal His plans for you. In Isaiah 43:19 He says, “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”

Maybe you’re worn out and weary, wondering how you’re going to have the strength to get through this new year. God will give you new strength. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord...”

Whatever this year holds, we can rest assured that the One who holds it has plans for our good. There may be pain and heartache, but He will be in the midst of it, holding our hand, showing us His love. Plans may fall through, but He will never leave us nor forsake us. There may be trials and tribulations, but we can take heart in knowing He is in charge, and we can cling to Him in prayer, saturate ourselves in His promises, and praise Him for His goodness. His mercies will be new every moment of 2023 and forever.

Let's cling to Him and claim His promise today,

“And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.”
Revelation 21:5

He is on the throne. He will make all things new. His promises are true and faithful.
